Land | Sky | Sea brings together work by local artists Clare Millen and Cat Mellis, whose contrasting but complimentary works convey a longing and joy for immersion in nature. A quote from Clare sums up the heart of this exhibition:
‘I hope this painting reminds you of somewhere that wild beauty and nature truly moved you. All my paintings are my own journey back to that place.’

About the artists:
Cat Mellis is a fine artist whose practice has developed from painting and graffiti art into printmaking. The original, one-off, screen-prints featured (Cat doesn’t make editions of these unique works) show her mastery of painterly mono-printing techniques alongside intricate illustrations. The larger, illustrative works from her ‘aqua dreams’ series were made pre-lock down, inspired by her love of diving. The smaller series of ‘horizons’ were produced during lock-down when Cat was prevented from accessing her studio (and its larger printing facilities) and the ocean that she loves. The use of florescent inks adds literal intensity to the horizon she longs to reach.

Clare Millen is an established local artist and lecturer, represented by VK gallery in St Ives, who creates her multi-layered abstract landscapes by building up, scraping back, and scoring into the painted canvas. Originally an oil painter, she now uses acrylics to achieve the sensitive, luminous surfaces she seeks in a fraction of the drying time of oils. Inspired by land, sky and sea, Clare would say that ‘Paintings are my emotional landscape.’
