Water’s Edge brings together work by two artists called Emily Jolley! One a Huntingdon-based artist and founder of H A G; the other Brighton based who grew up near Ely. They first became aware of one another due to misdirected emails. This show is about reflections – the mirroring of names and interests, and the artists’ responses to bodies of water. Specifically, to Jesus Green Lido (Cambridge) and walks along the River Ouse (Huntingdon).
About the Artists:
Emily Jolley (HAG) specialises in expressive abstract paintings incorporating emulsion paint. Her ‘Growing Reflections’ series, and large gouache painting ‘Swallow Flight’ have been inspired by walking, watching and sketching the banks of the River Ouse. The result is elegant paintings that capture aspects of the feeling/experience of that place and moment, as well as evoking sights from the riverside from reflections, shifting skys and shafts of light; to birds carving paths against water and sky. Emily lives and works in Huntingdon and from a studio in Cambridge.

Jolley, Emily is a painter and watercolour teacher based in Brighton. Of her featured work she says:
‘This is the start of my exploratory journey into painting lidos around the country. There is nothing more appealing to me than swimming in an open pool, it triggers happy childhood memories of shimmering reflections, ice creams, cold water, the smell of sun creme and the colour turquoise.
‘The lido I am currently painting is Jesus Green Lido, Cambridge. I was brought up in East Anglia and this lido has been a good starting point as it has taken me back to those evocative memories of hot summer holidays. It is a whopping 91 metres long and 14 metres wide and runs alongside the river.
‘The paintings start with small studies in watercolour and then as I get to know the shapes, colours and feel of the place, I thin out the detail and concentrate on layers and marks, drawing on my memory and experience. The paintings are a record of the time I spent there, and each lido has a different character that I hope to draw out in the painting.’
